Position Title: IGCC Director of Special Projects, Middle East Programs (Payroll title: Academic Coordinator)

Salary: Salary is commensurate with experience and will be based on published UC pay scales for Academic Coordinator series.

Description: The UC Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC), located at UC San Diego, invites applications for the position of Director of Special Projects, Middle East Programs (hereafter, "The ME Director"). The ME Director will be responsible for direction of substantive programs and management of IGCC's special projects related to security and regional issues in the Middle East.

The incumbent will work closely with Middle East Program Director, Military-Security, to help advance the mission of IGCC’s Middle East track two dialogue. An important focus for the ME Director will be the Middle East Network Library website (http://www.MENL.org). The ME Director will work with the Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies (NESA), UCLA, and others to coordinate content development for the site. The ME Director will also assist the Principal Investigator at UCLA in fundraising for the political and economic Middle East dialo-gues run by the Center for Middle East Development, and will attend those meetings. The in-cumbent will also write and edit conference proceedings and reports as necessary. In this capaci-ty, the ME Director will be responsible for coordination and liaison between the UCLA Principal Investigator and his staff at UCLA, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), NESA, the U.S. Department of State, as well as actual and potential Congressional supporters of the IGCC and UCLA Middle East programs.

The ME Director will also work with the IGCC leaders to establish Middle East research initiatives, write grants, and coordinate multiple research portfolios. Conference management skills are essential, as is a willingness to help out on various tasks as they come up. The Middle East Program is run by a small team, and team members have to be ready to help out as needed. The ME Director will need to be able to travel to Washington D.C., New York, the Middle East, and Europe, among other locations, to attend conferences, substantive discussions, fundraising sessions, and for general program coordination.

About IGCC: Around the globe, issues of war and peace continue to present challenges to the international community. More than ever, world problems require careful thinking, creative re-search, and practical approaches if they are to be solved. Since 1983, the UC Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC) has engaged in such work, facilitating innovative research into the causes of international conflict and cooperation.

As a research unit serving the entire UC system, IGCC builds project teams from all ten UC campuses and the Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos National Laboratories. IGCC researchers study a wide range of topics involving security, environmental, and economic policies that shape our ability to prevent conflict and promote cooperation across the globe. IGCC’s ongoing work in its core areas is complemented by the recognition that evolving threats to global stability require exploration of nontraditional connections between and across disciplines and institutions.

IGCC builds bridges between the theory and practice of international policy. We inject fresh ideas into the process by establishing the intellectual foundations for effective policy-making, and provide ways for UC faculty and students to interact with government officials at home and abroad through our collaborative, multi-campus projects and through our office at the UC Washington Center.

Qualifications: Individuals from international studies/relations, social sciences, and public policy are encouraged to apply for the IGCC ME Director position. Applicants should have a Ph.D. (preferred) or the equivalent graduate degree with progressively related experience in the field, or combination. Experience in policy positions is a plus. The successful candidate will have these qualities:

• Experience in research and proven ability to conceptualize, develop and evaluate projects on the Middle East and other security policy research.

• Excellent analytical, written, and oral communication skills.

• Demonstrated planning, multi-tasking, and research skills.

• Experience in administration, operational decision making, project management, and conference coordination.

• The ability to relate effectively to the international community, academic and campus governance, departments, military and federal government 
officials.

• Strong organizational and budgetary skills suitable to running a complex program and staying within fiscal parameters.

• A strong network of contacts and the institutional linkage or ties with the educational and research community needed to build research prospects and initiatives.

Start Date: Preferred starting date is September 1, 2009, although an earlier start date may be possible. The position is a one-year, renewable contract.
