Program Director

The Middle East Institute (est. 1946), a non-profit organization in Washington, DC is seeking a Director of Programs to lead MEI’s Programs Department.  MEI Programs are a core component of MEI’s mission to promote knowledge and understanding about the Middle East.

This is a high-profile position for an scholar with relevant experience in the Middle East to work in Washington, network with foreign Embassies and the US government while pursuing personal scholarly projects.

The Director of Programs researches and recruits speakers on political, economic, social and cultural issues of relevance for timely MEI programs, which range from both off-the-record and televised lectures to public debates to major conferences and seminars both in Washington, DC and other cities.  

He/She supervises planning and organization of the events and hosts them in coordination with the President and Vice President of the Institution.  The Director of Programs will liaise with Embassies, US and foreign government departments, partner NGO’s and other groups in the Middle East and US for joint endeavors.  Responsibilities also include preparing and managing the department’s budget; supervising an assistant and department interns; serving as moderator for events when necessary, and conducting briefings and other public lectures as requested.  

In addition, the Director of Programs is encouraged to write op-ed pieces and longer analytical work which MEI will place in the media and on our website.  The ideal candidate has the presence and willingness to comment on breaking news events on national and international news channels. Foreign and domestic travel may be required.  

Applicants must be eligible to work in the US. Sponsorship for a Visa will not be provided. Candidates should have five years of related professional experience.  The position requires constant networking in addition to sound organizational, managerial and communication skills. Salary is commensurate with qualifications.
