Associate Director, the Boston Consortium on Gender, Security, and Human Rights 

Summary of Position:

The Associate Director for the Boston Consortium on Gender, Security, and Human Rights, at the Center for Gender, Security, and Human Rights at the University of Massachusetts Boston, will co-manage and assist the Director in the research, policy and educational work of the Center. S/he will carry out the development of an on-line research hub on gender, peace and security and assist the Director in developing a Global Research Centre on Gender and Crisis Prevention and Recovery. S/he will be responsible for the Boston Consortium on Gender, Security and Human Rights’ internship program including selecting, training, and managing graduate and undergraduate interns; develop and manage a speaker series and faculty seminars; edit lectures for publication, and if appropriate teach one undergraduate course each year. S/he will also be responsible for managing the center’s budget; assist with grant writing and fundraising; and be responsible for the general administrative duties of the center, including developing collaborative relationships within the university community, with a wider network of scholars internationally, and with international organizations. 

The Associate Director’s duties will include:

Overseeing the development of an on-line research agenda and research hub on gender, peace and security, including the on-going training of the volunteer intern staff populating the site with data;
Training interns in effective research techniques;
Managing all aspects of the internship program, including interviewing applicants, finding internship sponsors, and meeting with the interns regularly;
Assisting the Director in the development of a Global Research Centre on Gender and Crisis Prevention and Recovery, including the development of a month-long Summer Training Institute on Gender Research Methodology and Ethics; 
Developing and coordinating faculty seminars; 
Developing and managing a speaker’s series, including assisting with speaker selection and managing all aspects of the event;
Editing lectures and other items for publication; 
Developing and maintaining the Center’s website;
Potentially teaching one undergraduate course a year; 
Managing and overseeing the center’s budget including development of an annual budget;
Reporting on funding and expenditures to the director;
Working with the Dean and the College’s major gift officer to raise funds for the Center;
Researching possible grant funding opportunities and applying for grants; 
Assisting in research projects and the policy work of the center, and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Doctorate in a related field strongly preferred. Must have broad knowledge of the field of gender, armed conflict and security. Must be a highly effective manager with significant administrative experience and the ability to organize, manage, prioritize and ensure effective completion of a large number of substantial projects in a fast-paced work environment. S/he also must have excellent writing and editing skills, strong financial skills, and the high level personal, organizational and mentoring skills necessary to run a large internship program. Must have experience and skill in academic research preferably related to gender and security. College teaching experience in the area of gender and armed conflict is highly desirable.
