SOVEREIGNTY AND GLOBALIZATION:
THE NEW REALITIES OF MANAGING THE INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM

The new century began with a recognition of the promises as well as the challenges of a changing international system. Having overcome a non-existent technological breakdown related to the entry into a new century, the world is faced with the reality of conflict in a borderless world, with the dark side of science being used in an extraordinary manner. These challenges were anticipated at the start of the century and they are now a reality that requires new perspectives and management skills as the international system faces a crisis of unprecedented proportions. The focus of this conference is to take a broad view, drawing on historical perspective as well as contemporary analysis, to evaluate the ideologies, political and economic institutions, security apparatus, cultural values, and the human spirit in understanding and responding to the challenges of the new order. Herein lies the promise of the new century as coalitions form across borders and common interests transcend cultural, political, and economic alignments. The millennium series forum encourages a gathering of members of the academic community, policy makers, and other professionals to participate in a two day retreat to engage in an intensive exchange of research and experience. The meeting proposes to cross-disciplinary and professional boundaries in seeking to find new perspectives and paradigms of understanding. Paper, Panel, and Roundtable proposals are invited on relevant topics that will contribute to our understanding of the realities of a changed world.
