COMPARATIVE
INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES SECTION
Welcome to the home page of the Comparative Interdisciplinary Studies
Section of the International Studies Association. The Section is
dedicated to the application of an interdisciplinary perspective to the
study of international, transnational, and regional issues, with special
emphasis on sources of conflict, patterns of change and continuity, and
the development of societies and institutions within the international
system. The Section encourages innovative research and exploration of
paradigms and methodologies in analyzing these complex phenomena. CISS
actively seeks to bring scholars, policy makers, and practitioners
together in a cooperative effort to achieve a synergism between
divergent disciplines and perspectives. At the threshold of the new
century, recognizing the need to revitalize the interdisciplinary
approach and apply it towards understanding the issues arising from a
globalizing world, a new leadership initiative undertaken in 1998,
established the Millennium Series of conferences and forums to provide
an opportunity for members of the international studies community to
exchange research on the changing international system. The CISS forums
are designed as innovative capsule meetings and outreach to encourage
participation in an interdisciplinary dialogue. Previous Millennium
conferences have been held in Paris, France (1999, 2008), Washington
D.C., USA (2000), Heidelberg, Germany (2001), Brugge, Belgium (2002),
Salzburg, Austria (2004), the Hague, Netherlands (2006), and Bucaco,
Portugal (2007). The conferences seek to encourage an intellectual
exchange transcending disciplinary and professional boundaries.
Conference participants have included, scholars as well as
professionals, and policy makers. from a wide range of countries and
international institutions located across the globe The delegates at
previous conferences have represented over 67 institutions and countries
including NATO, U.S. Dept. of State, and the United Nations among
others. The section encourages participation from all who are interested
in engaging in an intellectually stimulating and rewarding dialogue and
contributing to our understanding of a complex international system.
